Aruba, the pearl of the Dutch Caribbean, is often called One Happy Island. This place is undoubtedly a paradise for water activity enthusiasts. However, is it also ideal for cyclists?
Before you start your cycling experience, be aware of some cycling hazards in Aruba:
- Climate (sun, heat and winds)
- Heavy traffic on main roads
- Narrow roads without hard shoulders
- Holes in roadways; sand and sharp stones on dirt tracks
- Lack of designated bike paths
- Congestion at beach resorts
- Packs of dogs running around the island
Despite these obstructions, you can still ride a bike in Aruba. The northern part of the island offers relatively convenient trails. The terrain of Arikok National Park is more challenging and may require technical skills and a proper mountain bike. Bike rental companies in Aruba offer an extensive fleet of bikes to meet the requirements of every rider.
Why not combine riding with exploring the historical heritage of Aruba and its best attractions? If this is for you, consider to buy Monuments Guide Aruba by Olga van der Klooster and Michael Bakker. This illustrated guidebook includes details of 100 historical objects on the island. Each of them is indicated on the map, making touring much easier.
A laminated road map of Aruba by Borch is also used efficiently while cycling. Included are street maps of Oranjestad and San Nicolas.
The brief itineraries below may inspire your bike trip. These routes can last for a few hours or a full day. The duration will also depend on your fitness as well as time spent on the beach or sightseeing.
COAST TO COAST (Oranjestad – Druif Beach – Manchebo Beach – Eagle Beach – Palm Beach – Malmok Beach – Arashi Beach – California Dunes – California Lighthouse – Druif Beach – Urirama Beach – Alto Vista Chapel – Philip’s Animal Garden – Oranjestad) / distance approx. 30 km
The route begins with a ride along the most renowned beaches of Aruba, namely Eagle, Palm and Arashi. At the northern end of the island, see a miniature Sahara – known as California Dunes. The nearby California Lighthouse is one of the island's major landmarks. The hill on which the lighthouse is located offers magnificent views of the surroundings. The stretch of dirt track along the north-eastern coast is somewhat more difficult. Pass by two secluded beaches – Druif and Urirama and reach another famous landmark – the Alto Vista Chapel. On your way back to Oranjestad, you will have an opportunity to visit Philip's Animal Garden – a home for a variety of fascinating animals.
NATURAL WONDERS (Oranjestad – Alto Vista Chapel – Wariruri Beach – Bushiribana Ruins – Aruba Ostrich Farm – Natural Bridge – Andicuri Beach – Ayo Rock Formations – Casibari Rock Formations – Oranjestad) / distance approx. 30 km
Another route offers a great opportunity to admire the island's natural wonders. Start the ride in Oranjestad and head towards Alto Vista Chapel. From there, descend on a dirt track and ride along the isolated eastern coast. The huge castle-like ruins are remnants of a former gold mine at Bushiribana. It is worth stopping at the nearby Aruba Ostrich Farm and learning about the extraordinary birds housed there. After returning to the trail, continue along the coast to reach Natural Bridge. The coastal scenery offers an impressive sight at this point. After arriving at Andicuri Beach, turn west towards Ayo and then towards the Basibari rock formations. You can return directly to Oranjestad or climb the Hoiberg peak (secure your bike at the bottom).
BEACH AND RIDE (Oranjestad – Aruba Aloe Factory – St Anne’s Church – Palm Beach – Bubali Bird Sanctuary – Butterfly Farm – Eagle Beach – Manchebo Beach – Druif Beach – Oranjestad) / distance approx. 17 km
This is a slightly lighter route which can be combined with some relaxation on one of the marvellous west coast beaches. You can start a trip by visiting the Aruba Aloe Factory located on the northern outskirts of Oranjestad. It is a fascinating and working aloe plantation with an adjacent shop, factory and museum. From St Ann's Church, head west to Palm Beach and make a stop at the Aruba Butterfly Farm. Here, you will admire hundreds of exotic butterflies displayed in the tropical garden. The rest of the route runs amongst the vibrant holiday resorts and beaches. In Oranjestad, ride along the designated cycle path on Lloyd G. Smith Blvd and complete your trip at Surfside Beach.
Useful tips:
- Aruba is not the easiest place for cyclists, but with a bit of effort riding on the island is not only achievable, but you will also be amply rewarded with beautiful sights and exciting adventures.
- The major roads are always busy. If possible, avoid them (particularly Rte 1).
- Protect yourself against the sun and drink plenty of water. Store some extra water and food when visiting more isolated parts of the island.
- Do not ride after dark. If you must do so, equip your bike with a reliable multi-point lighting set.
- Use a helmet at all times when riding.
- Carry spare tubes and a set of tools; punctures are frequent on the local tracks.
- Beware of dogs. If they approach you, do not speed up. Also, stay focused on the traffic to avoid a collision with a car.
- Before riding into Arikok National Park, stop at the park visitor centre, where you will receive guidance on sightseeing options and safety measures.
- If you are uncertain about riding on your own, rent a guide or join a bike tour (arranged by one of the local cycling tour operators).
